How the Year 2440 was Imagined in 1771
In 1771, French author Louis-Sébastien Mercier published the novel "The Year 2440: A Dream If Ever There Was One" Written from the perspective of an 18th century man who falls asleep and wakes up in Paris nearly 700 years later, the book is a fascinating example of utopian retro-futurism.
Mercier imagines a world transformed by philosophy and reason, with an agrarian society that has invented hologram-like technology. The video delves into Mercier's depictions of the future city of Paris, advancements in science and culture, changes in religion and education, and his ideas for an ideal government led by an egalitarian philosopher-king. Now centuries old, this work offers a fascinating glim...

The Oldest Voices We Can Still Hear

The 1800s aren’t usually remembered through sound. While Photographs allow us to see this century more vividly than any before it, the stern-faced Victorians stare back at us in silence from their portraits. It was only in the 20th century that the phenomenon of playing back voices became so common that we take it for granted. But the technology to do so existed far earlier, allowing us to list...

When Europe tried to build Chinese Architecture
Просмотров 302 тыс.10 месяцев назад
In the 18th century, Chinese houses, pavilions and palaces were erected across Europe as part of a fascination with all things oriental. Iam so happy my grandfather was into researching family history and recording and researching alot of it. I have a Picture of the "Jugendstil" house I grew up in after it was built. With people looking out the windows and on the corner, where today is a side entrance to my neighbours flat, was a store for Colonialwares and Groceries. I also have a picture of my great great great uncle and great great great grandfather who both fought in the Boxerrebellion (on the alliance side...) there's also a bow and arrow and a wooden statue, which is still in my moms living room, that they supposedly brought over). I also have a picture of my great great grandma and her twin who (we just later found out) were apparently relatively wealthy polish jews but never talked about it and noone in my family knew until now(since we are german and yeah, you can imagine why they hid that part of their identity at the time). I also have pictures of my great grandpa from the other side of the family in an SA uniform... There's so much more... I often thought about uploading some of these to a subreddit dedicated to old pictures (because I think people would find them quite interesting) but somehow it feels a little to intimate and, knowing the geoguessrs out there, I really don't want to dox myself via some picture from 1905 or something. :D

I think there are many people who find the audio recording of Scott to be eerie or disturbing. That's only a natural response; the sound is distorted and unclear, it barely sounds like a human voice. But I think we sometimes fail to listen to these voices and perceive them as people. Hearing this audio is creepy, but I find the sound kinda cute when I picture some random historical French guy singing a nursery rhyme into a machine he made. I like to try and imagine his thought process before recording this. Maybe it was something like "Great, great, I just built a cool machine! It'll probably make history and result in many technological advancements over the years. What do I say into it?" And then he just starts singing. That's so wholesome.

This author definetly had some good ideas like making Paris cleaner, low taxes, more equality, focus on science and forcing the king to be raised as commoners to understand the plight of ordinary people (he also says they have to fast and sleep on the floor for three days per year). But there are also some things he got wrong imo. I don’t know why it’s necessary to abolish all luxury goods and even ban coffee. I understand that in the context when this story was written these goods were acquired through slavery but why couldn’t there simply be a more ethical way of harvesting them instead? The fact that he ignores the role of women is also a flaw with his futuristic utopia. I also don’t see why it was necessary for them to burn so many controversial books and maintain their faith. It seems like he viewed knowledge and discourse about controversial topics as something potentially dangerous. Their religion also doesn’t seem to serve an important role in their society so I wonder why it’s necessary at all. The doctrine seems very passive and vague.

Somehow, the scale of these buildings changes the way they feel emotionally. If they were smaller, they'd be beautiful. But with the scale he designed them at, they're almost oppressive. Vast, uncaring monoliths dedicated to the functions and perpetuation of an omnipresent government.

It seems after analyzing the contents of this video of this historical read, that the author was likely seeing events within an alternate-history parallel world where events in human history took a turn for the better instead of the worst. An alternate-history world where objective morality and acknowledgment of its origin from a higher power/god, common sense, and reason are more prevalent and paramount.
